During this time of the year most people including myself are taking a closer look at their dietary lifestyle. For me this is mainly to make sure that I’m eating more Vata-pacifying foods (more on this later) which my body needs during the winter months for optimal health and energy. Eating seasonal foods is a great way to keep your body in balance and honor what mother nature has supplied. You can find so many options at your local farmers market and grocery stores. During the colder months, I make every effort to have more grains and vegetables.
WHAT IS AN AYURVEDIC LIFESTYLE
Today in particular, I will prepare a hot soup with my favorite organic root vegetables. The combination of Yams, squash, potatoes and peas are my favorite and they are more than enough for this snowy day. I also will add in one grain that will make this a hearty meal. I follow an Ayurvedic Lifestyle without the consumption of animals and their bi-products. This lifestyle has helped myself and others heal from the inside. Eating according to each season keeps things exciting and you benefit from having a really good and healthy digestion system. My nutrition clients constantly rave about finally having a healthy gut. They sleep better and they are full of energy.
NEW FOODS TO SHOP DURING THE WINTER SEASON
Consider adding in grains to your meals if you haven’t before. Before the rave of health conscious consumers, it used to be very difficult to locally source grains. Because of the demand there are more suppliers of grains. You can get most grains in your local grocery store these days. My suggestion is to buy organic and price shop to see where you can get the best deal. I go through a bag very quickly so price is a big factor for me.
GRAINS TO EAT DURING THE WINTER
Here are a few grains to consider during this cold season. Try finding these at your local farmers market. Keep in mind that you can also buy most in the bulk section of your grocery store which is a great way to sample a little without buying a full bag. And if your local store doesn’t carry any of these you can buy them online. Thanks to modern technology we no longer have to depend on the buyers of the store to supply us what we would like.
